There are three types of impact wrench. The rattle gun, the cordless impact wrench and the pneutmatic (or air) impact wrench. This article looks at all three in order to highlight the pros and cons of each type.
Let’s deal with the rattle guns first. Rattle guns operate using major levels of torque in short blasts of speed to shift bolts & nuts clockwise and anti-clockwise. Which means that that one can work with this power-tool on jobsites where bolts and lugs have to be attached and removed to steel girders. While the rattle gun is often the most highly-priced type of impact wrench, the power that it offers is impressive. The downside to the rattle gun is the fact that the user is tethered to the mains by the power cable.
Cordless battery powered impact wrenches, the second type of impact wrench, are deemed to be the best tool for the worker who is required to work at jobsites where there’s only a small chance of electrical power being available. It is widely known that the battery electric impact wrench is the more effective option, for the most part due to the costly lithium cell batteries that they incorporate, but the portability that they bring to the table is peerless. The only disadvantage is the reduced level of torque generation in comparison to the other types of wrench currently available.
Finally, the air impact wrench (habitually referred to as a pneumatic impact wrench) definitely has the most impressive amount of power available to dislodge rusty bolts and nuts and tighten up bolts on structural steel. Because of the fact that the tool is run by a separate power source means that it can generate improved torque and much higher rotational capacity. The clear inconvenience when using the pneumatic impact wrench is that fact that one is faced with the fact that you have to make sure that you’ve always brought an air compressor along to the job site. If this doesn’t really bother you in any way, or if you are located in a garage, then the pneumatic impact wrench is the one to spend your money on.
